CURATORIAL COMMENT
In preparation for this commission, Wyeth read an undated edition of The Scottish Chiefs published by Thomas D. Crowell Company, New York, illustrated with photographs of Scottish scenery (Brandywine River Museum NCWS.95.184). According to notes on the Scribner's file card for this painting, it was returned to the artist on Nov. 1, 1921, for an exhibition, possibly Boston, MA, 1921 (Scribner's Archive, Brandywine River Museum).
